## From the Observation Deck: A Bittersweet Farewell to Cygnus
The hum of a departing spacecraft. For many, it’s just a line in a news report. For me, it’s a symphony that tugs at something deep within. Watching Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus cargo spacecraft prepare to undock from the International Space Station brings back a flood of memories – the tangible feel of aluminum alloys, the meticulous checks of thermal blankets, the sheer, exhilarating challenge of ensuring everything was precisely where it needed to be, ready for the unforgiving vacuum of space.
This particular departure, marking the end of Cygnus NG-23’s resupply mission, is a significant event. It successfully delivered over 11,000 pounds of critical supplies, experiments, and hardware to the astronauts on board Expedition 73. Think of it: a floating laboratory stocked and ready for another round of groundbreaking science, all thanks to the reliable workhorse that is Cygnus. And soon, it will perform its final duty, a controlled burn-up in Earth’s atmosphere, taking with it several thousand pounds of the station’s refuse. It’s a clean, efficient end to a vital mission.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to witness a piece of space logistics in action. We’ll see the Canadarm2, that incredible robotic arm, carefully detach Cygnus from the Unity module. Then, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot will be keeping a watchful eye on the spacecraft as it begins its journey home.
This Cygnus mission is notable for being the first flight of the larger, more capable version of the spacecraft. This evolution means even more can be ferried to and from orbit, pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve in space. It’s a testament to the continuous innovation that defines space exploration. The spacecraft’s journey began back in September 2025, launching from Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Now, after its successful delivery, it’s time for its graceful exit.
